About Superalloys for Casting

Superalloys (or high-temperature/heat-resistant alloys) are high-performance materials engineered to maintain exceptional mechanical properties in extreme environments. Based on their principal alloying element, they are primarily categorized into nickel-based, cobalt-based, and iron-based families.

Because of their extreme strength and heat resistance, superalloys are notoriously difficult to machine or cold-form. Consequently, casting is often the most practical manufacturing method, allowing high-melting-point metals to be formed directly into complex, near-net shapes. The commonly used grades include Inconel 718, Inconel 625, and Hastelloy X.

Inconel 625

Inconel 625 is a nickel-based superalloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and outstanding performance across a wide temperature spectrum, from -150°C  up to 980°C, which makes it a universal material for critical components operating in extreme environments.

Density Melting Range Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness Max Operating Temp.
8.44 g/cm³ 1290–1350°C (2354–2462°F) 850–1000 MPa (123–145 ksi) 400–550 MPa (58–80 ksi) 25–45% 200–300 HB  980°C (1800°F)

Inconel 713C

Inconel 713C is a precipitation-hardened, nickel-base cast superalloy engineered specifically for high-stress applications operating at elevated temperatures up to 927°C (1700°F). Common applications include automotive turbocharger rotors, gas turbine blades, and jet engine guide vanes where mechanical integrity under extreme centrifugal stress is critical.

Density Melting Range Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness Max Operating Temp.
7.96 g/cm³ 1250–1330°C (2282–2426°F) 800–950 MPa (116–138 ksi) 600–750 MPa (87–109 ksi) 2–6% 330–400 HB 900°C (1652°F)

Inconel 718

Inconel 718 is one of the most widely used nickel-based superalloys. Its outstanding mechanical properties are maintained across a wide temperature range, making it suitable for demanding aerospace, energy, and industrial applications.

Density Melting Range Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness Max Operating Temp.
8.19 g/cm³  1260–1340°C (2300–2444°F) 900–1100 MPa (131–160 ksi) 500–800 MPa (73–116 ksi) 10–25% 330–450 HB 700°C (1300°F)

Hastelloy X

Hastelloy X is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum superalloy engineered for exceptional oxidation resistance, matrix stability, and fabricability at elevated temperatures up to 1200°C (2200°F). Cast components in this grade are widely utilized in gas turbine combustion chambers, transition ducts, aircraft cabin heaters, and industrial furnace hardware where prolonged exposure to aggressive, high-temperature atmospheres is required.

Density Melting Range Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness Max Operating Temp.
8.22 g/cm³ 1260–1355°C (2300–2471°F) 750–850 MPa (109–123 ksi) 300–400 MPa (44–58 ksi) 25–35% 180–250 HB 1200°C (2192°F)

K18 Nickel-Based Superalloy

K18 is one of the common cast nickel-based superalloys under the Chinese high-temperature alloy standard system. It’s also one of the most-used superalloys in YTD; another is Inconel 718.  It is designed for high-temperature components requiring excellent creep resistance, oxidation resistance, and structural stability.

Density Melting Range Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation Hardness Max Operating Temp.
8.10 g/cm³ 1260–1335°C (2300–2435°F) 800–950 MPa (116–138 ksi) 600–750 MPa (87–109 ksi) 3–8% 280–350 HB 950°C (1742°F)

How We Cast Superalloy

We cast superalloys through the investment casting process – our core capability as a foundry. With the Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) furnace, we melt superalloys under strict vacuum conditions, eliminating any risk of atmospheric contamination and protecting active elements from oxidation, ensuring the final casting has precise chemical purity and high structural integrity.

Finishe Options for Superalloy Castings

Leveraging our in-house finishing capabilities and supply chain versatility, we provide turnkey solutions for your superalloy casting projects.

  • Surface Cleaning: Immediate sandblasting and shot blasting after de-shelling to remove all scale and provide a uniform satin finish.
  • Polishing: Manual and automated polishing lines to achieve strict surface roughness requirements.
  • CNC Finishing: Multi-axis CNC machining centers equipped with specialized tooling to handle the severe work-hardening of nickel and cobalt alloys, ensuring tight dimensional tolerances.
