Materials for Turbine Housings

Temperature, exhaust or process chemistry, thermal cycling, strength, and expected service life all influence the metal. If the grade is already specified, send it with the drawing. If it is still open, the operating conditions give us a useful place to start.

SiMo & Heat-Resistant Cast Iron

Turbocharger hot-side housings face repeated heating and cooling in the exhaust stream. SiMo and other heat-resistant cast irons are common starting points when thermal stability, oxidation resistance, durability, and production cost must be balanced.

Stainless & Heat-Resistant Steel

Corrosive gases, elevated temperatures, or higher mechanical demands may lead to stainless or heat-resistant cast steel. Different grade families allow the metal to be matched more closely to the environment the housing will actually see.

High-Temperature Alloys

Nickel-, cobalt-, and iron-base alloys become relevant when ordinary steels no longer provide the required hot strength, oxidation resistance, or stability. YTD combines high-temperature alloy casting with the heat treatment, machining, and inspection specified for the part.

Carbon & Alloy Steel

Industrial turbine casings and support housings often put greater emphasis on structural strength, toughness, section size, and heat-treatment requirements. Carbon and alloy steel grades offer a broad range for these designs.

Investment and Sand Casting for Turbine Housings

Compact housings with curved volutes, detailed bosses, and closely spaced features may suit silica-sol investment casting. It forms much of the shape in the casting and leaves the wheel bore, flanges, registers, and other functional interfaces for controlled machining.

Sand casting opens the route to larger industrial turbine casings and heavier housing designs. It also gives the project more freedom to plan large sections, cores, machining allowance, and handling around the scale of the part.

You do not need to choose between the two before contacting us. Geometry, material, size, quantity, final machining, and inspection all shape the decision. YTD reviews the finished part first and coordinates the selected route through delivery.

Plan Casting & Tooling

The housing geometry is translated into a casting and tooling proposal that also accounts for cores, machining allowance, finishing, and inspection.

The first casting gives your team something real to measure, inspect, and trial in the assembly. Agreed corrections are completed before the batch moves ahead.

Produce Repeat Orders

After approval, production follows the agreed drawing, specifications, inspection plan, and accepted sample. Those records provide the reference for later orders.

Turbine Housing Features and Inspection

A housing can look complete before its most important surfaces are finished. On a turbocharger housing, attention often centers on the volute, wheel clearance, bearing-housing register, inlet and outlet connections, bolt pattern, and wastegate features. Industrial turbine casings bring a different set of priorities, including split lines, flow passages, bearing and seal locations, and large mounting interfaces.

YTD plans the casting and machining around the finished drawing. Your inspection scope can include:

  • Material composition, hardness, and tensile testing
  • Dimensional inspection and CMM reports for specified interfaces
  • Fluorescent penetrant and X-ray inspection when required

Acceptance requirements are agreed before production, giving both teams the same basis for reviewing the first housing and the parts that follow.
