Open-Frame Structure

Two circular end rings joined by connecting sections, leaving space for the reel’s internal components.

Machined Mounting Features

Threaded holes and mounting details around the end ring for assembly with mating components.

Laser-Engraved Markings

Line-capacity information engraved on the frame for reference on the assembled reel.

Customer Requirements & YTD’s Approach

Customer requirement

Produce the complete frame geometry

The component combined circular end rings, narrow connecting sections and large openings within a small part.
YTD’s approach

Form the main body by investment casting

The casting established the frame shape before the required machining and finishing operations.
Customer requirement

Complete the mounting features

Screw holes and installation holes were required in several locations around the frame.
YTD’s approach

Machine the specified holes after casting

YTD supplied the frame with these assembly features completed.

Casting the Frame Before Machining

Producing an open frame entirely from solid stock requires material removal to create the central space and surrounding openings.

For this project, investment casting formed the main body. Subsequent machining completed the screw and mounting holes, followed by polishing and laser marking.

This approach combined cast geometry with machined assembly features in the finished component.

Discuss the Manufacturing Route for Your Part

A Practical Manufacturing Route for 500 Frames

The customer needed 500 custom aluminum frames. For this order, the complex die-casting tooling would have required too much upfront investment, while machining each frame entirely from solid aluminum would have made the cost per part too high.

YTD considered the component’s shape, order quantity and budget, and recommended silica sol investment casting. It offered a practical balance between tooling investment and production cost for this batch.

The main frame was formed by casting, followed by machining of the screw and mounting holes. This approach met the part’s manufacturing requirements while keeping the production route appropriate for the customer’s 500-piece order.
